Mowen Boino ran a sensational 400 metres hurdles race at the Loughborough EAP Meet on Saturday, clocking 50.57 seconds to win by a big margin.
It was a huge last effort by the veteran hurdler to impress the selectors and make his fourth Olympic Games.
However with no one to chase, the odds were against Boino breaking the magic 50 second barrier and he had to be content with his best time of the year and second best ever performance.
Betty Burua (pictured above) was also in great form at the same meet, recording a huge personal best in the 400m of 53.63 seconds to win her race.
“This is a performance that will give great confidence to Betty for the future,” Athletics PNG president Tony Green said.
Green joined the athletes in the United Kingdom on Friday.
Her performance and that of Mowen are just reward for all the hard work they have done in the past year.
Toea Wisil and Nelson Stone were also in action at Loughborough, with Wisil placing third in the 100m with 11.59secs.
Stone, however, was not at his best and could only manage 48.17secs for the 400m.
However, a recent 200m clocking of 21,56secs in London shows that Stone is getting back to his best form following his injury setback in April this year.
The PNG athletic team for the Games will be announced tomorrow following consultations with the PNG National Olympic Committee.
