The Brian Bell Scholarships men completed round five of the Gold Coast Cricket Competition with Broadbeach, Palm Beach & Runaway Bay all registering wins respectively.
Burleigh Heads suffered their second successive loss to competition front runners Broadbeach after they were dismissed for a lowly 142 in the first innings then followed on to be 3/101 at the end of the days play. Burleigh was in tatters early after they lost early wicket and were reeling at 3/10. Chris Amini & Daniel Matheson fought hard on a tough pitch to get things back on track before Amini was caught behind for 22. Sese Bau then joined Matheson to build another solid partnership and looked to get things back on track before Matheson was caught and bowled for a well-made 38. Bau then followed soon after top edging a pull shot for 34. Burleigh was eventually dismissed for 142. They then followed on and managed to hold off Broadbeach attempt to claim outright points to end the day on 3/101. Chris Amini was not out on 37 with Jason Kila picking up 2/26 and Assad Vala 1/14.
Runaway Bay claimed their third win a row in another nail biter as Norman Vanua hit the winning runs to help Runaway Bay pass Mudgeeraba’s score of 148 with a wicket to spare. Earlier in the day Lega Siaka set the foundation for the run chase for the Seagulls with a well compiled 32 before he was caught at first slip. Seagulls skipper Trent Ray (48) then build solid partnerships in the middle before the run chase was completed by Vanua who contributed with a handy 11 at the end of the innings to guide Runaway Bay home.
Palm Beach held their nerves to hold off last season’s finalists Southport to remain second on the ladder. Defending 194, Palm Beach look set for defeat when Southport were looking comfortable at 3/114 before a late fight back saw Southport lose their last 7 wickets for 50 runs to be bowled out for 163. English import, Mark Wood was the best of the bowlers after he picked up 3/38.
Round 6 is the beginning of the one day matches with the two inform teams, Broadbeach (Assad Vala & Jason Kila) and Runaway Bay (Charles Amini, Lega Siaka & Norman Vanua) going head to head whilst Burleigh Heads take on Southport and Palm Beach taking on Queens before the Christmas and New Year break.
